Alex (played by Margaret Qualley) sleeps on a subway platform with her toddler, is almost invisible at homes she works as a maid in, is broken to an extent where she lives in a van with her ill, sometimes delusional mother and boyfriend. All this because she escaped her partner, that never raised a hand on her, but she felt threatened by nonetheless. Her journey going from in and out of domestic violence shelters, eventually to find her footing as a young mom and a writer is what ‘Maid’ is about. The show has a clear message; Emotional abuse is abuse, period. Her partner makes her feel loved, hated and also, very helpless.
If you’re ready to shed a tear at times through the 10-part Netflix series, go for it. As heart-wrenching as it is, ‘Maid’ leaves you feeling hopeful toward the end. It’s a story of emotional vulnerability, responsibilities, hopelessness and heartbreak. The show takes you through the good and the bad, only to show the roller coaster that life is.
