Ever thought you were funny enough to be a stand-up comedian? That’s what Joel thought too. That’s Mr. Maisel of Mr. and Mrs. Maisel.
Unhappy with his life, Joel, a businessman, decides to give comedy a try, oblivious to his lack of talent. After a particularly bad night at a café, he projects his failure on his wife and he leaves her for his secretary soon after. Pretty upsetting, right? Now, here’s the twist. Through her numerous notes on her husband’s bad comedy sets, Midge Maisel, a housewife, is a natural charmer. She’s funny without realising it.
On the dreadful day of her husband’s exit, she gets drunk, goes to a bar and starts being funny, on stage. Sounds like stand up comedy, doesn’t it? And just like that, she goes from a housewife, living her comfortable upper-middle-class life to a struggling artist.
Filled with witty antics, this show is a period comedy-drama. If you’re looking for some entertainment with great scriptwriting, oh-so-good outfits, enthralling performances, and thought-provoking dialogues, this is for you.
Mrs Maisel will take you back to the 1950s. You get a peek into the American society post the world wars. How women are perceived, the lack of opportunity and taboo around sexuality. Doesn’t sound too different from 2021 but okay, it was worse back then for sure.
It even touches upon the struggles of the LGBT community. We’re not sure if you could watch it with your parents during a Sunday afternoon meal. It has a fair share of nudity and strong language. But when all is said and done, this is one series you do not want to miss!
