Mindhunter is inspired by a real story of two officers who are intrigued by criminal psychology back when nobody was interested in having a conversation with people doing despicable acts. It brings a creepy insight into a criminal’s mind with icy settings and suspenseful music. The series is directed by David Fincher who also directed Seven, Zodiac among other famous crime-thrillers.
In 1977, at a time where people didn’t know what to term ‘serial killers’, Bill Tench played by Holt McCallany. Holden Ford played by Jonathan Groff pitch to their bosses in law enforcement that they want not just to punish people who kill— but spend time with them, visit them in prison and understand their thoughts better.
“How do we get ahead of crazy if we don’t know how the crazy thinks?” says Bill; which captures the essence of their plan.
The encounters are scarily intimate, conversations are intense, and the scenes with the serial killers are almost spine-chilling.
Like how are you supposed to make peace with a serial killer hugging you tightly while he talks about his gruesome deeds in an isolated prison chamber? Well, Holden would know.
At times, it’s slow and academic, but the show has enough hair-raising moments to make it worth the pace.
The series is a compilation of many such visits with serial killers (often real-life ones) with a storyline following the personal and professional lives of Bill and Holden.
Mindhunter is a must-watch for anyone who is even remotely interested in crime, suspense or anything eerie.
